Welcome to Faial! We believe that the breathtaking beauty of our island—from its lush green volcanic craters to its dramatic coastline—should be enjoyed by everyone. To help you choose the experience that best fits your comfort level and physical abilities, we have detailed the accessibility and physical requirements for each of our tours below. If you have any specific needs, we are always happy to adapt our routes for you!

Tour Accessibility (Physical Requirements)

Car Tours (Half-Day & Full-Day Options)

These tours are designed to be comfortable and accessible for travelers of all ages and fitness levels.

  • Physical Activity Level: Minimal. The tour proceeds at a relaxed pace with stops at various viewpoints (Miradouros).

  • Walking Required: Walks at the stops are typically short (between 50 and 300 meters) on mostly flat surfaces such as asphalt, cobblestones, or packed dirt. You are always welcome to remain in the vehicle or rest on available benches.

  • Wheelchair & Stroller Accessibility: Many key viewpoints on Faial (including the main Caldeira viewpoint and the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre) are equipped with ramps and are wheelchair accessible.

  • Vehicle Entry: Please note that boarding our vehicle minivan requires stepping up a small distance. If you need assistance, your guide will be happy to help.

  • Storage Space: We have ample trunk space to accommodate a foldable wheelchair, a stroller, or walking sticks/canes.

Caldeira Crater Perimeter Hike (7 km / 4.3 miles)

One of the island's most stunning hikes (official trail PRC04 FAI), requiring basic endurance and surefootedness.

  • Physical Activity Level: Moderate. While the trail lacks extreme elevation changes, it is located at approximately 900 meters (2,950 ft) above sea level.

  • Terrain Conditions: The path is mostly dirt and can be muddy or slippery, especially after rain. You will encounter uneven surfaces, tree roots, rocks, and some narrow sections.

  • Health Restrictions: This hike is not recommended for:

    • Individuals with a fear of heights (vertigo), as sections of the trail follow the narrow crater rim.

    • Travelers with severe knee, ankle, or back issues.

    • Young children (under 7-8 years old), unless they are experienced hikers.

  • Required Gear: Sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip (hiking boots or trail runners) are mandatory. Trekking poles are highly recommended to reduce joint strain.

  • Weather Variability: At 900 meters, conditions can change rapidly, with strong winds, fog, or sudden rain being common. A windproof and waterproof jacket is essential.

Custom Requests & Adaptability

Have a special request? Let us know! If you or anyone in your group has specific mobility, dietary, or sensory requirements, please inform us in advance. We are happy to adjust our driving routes, choose flatter paths where possible, or schedule more frequent rest stops to ensure everyone has a fantastic experience on Faial.
